Dixie State University (formerly Dixie State College of Utah) is a four-year, public institution located in St. George, Utah. Founded in 1911 by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the College changed names and affiliations several times throughout its history. With only 2,000 students in the first years, there are now over 8,000. The university supports this number of students with a student / faculty ratio of 23 to 1. DSU offers a long list of academic programs between the schools of Education, Business and Communication, Science and Technology, Nursing and Allied Health, and Arts and Letters--majors in Business, Communications, and Education are among the most popular. DSU also has a wide range of student clubs and organizations, with everything from a Dungeons and Dragons Club to a Scuba Diving Club to a Humans vs. Zombies club. DSU also offers interesting intramurals such as Turkey Bowl, Swim Meet, and Fantasy Football. For fun off campus, students will find three reservoirs and ten golf courses nearby, and Zion National park is just a 45 minute drive. For intercollegiate sports, the DSU Red Storm competes in the NCAA Division II Pacific West Conference (PacWest). Football competes in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
